Labourer to Pay Rs 14 crore as Income Tax

The income tax department gave a notice to a daily wage labourer living in Bihar’s Rohtas district asking him to pay ?14 crores.

We all pay income tax based on our annual earnings. Some actors, celebrities and businessman pay crores in taxes and that is not shocking based on their high incomes. But can you imagine a daily wage labour paying an income tax worth 14 crore? Well, it has actually happened in real life. The income tax department gave a notice to a daily wage labourer living in Bihar’s Rohtas district asking him to pay ?14 crores.

The officials said that on Saturday, 17th of December, an income tax department team reached the house of one Manoj Yadav, a labourer and resident of Kargahar village in Bihar and served him a notice seeking payment of ?14 crores in income tax. According to the officials, his bank records showed transactions of crores of rupees being done, which makes him liable for paying the income tax. After receiving the notice, Yadav and his family were in deep shock. Yadav informed the officials that he was a daily wage labourer and would not be able to pay the said amount even after he sold his entire property multiple times.

Earlier, Yadav reportedly had worked in private companies in different places, including Delhi, Haryana and Punjab, but returned to his home in Bihar after the Covid lockdown in 2020. Yadav said, at the time of his employment at the private companies, they took copies of his Aadhar and PAN cards. He accused them of misusing his documents for opening forged bank accounts in his name and making transactions to escape income tax. The tax officials who visited Yadav’s house to serve him the notice were also surprised after seeing the economic condition of the family. Meanwhile, according to the locals, Yadav, along with his family, locked and left their house for some unknown destination late Monday evening of 19th December.
