Is FIFA Helping Argentina Win? The Controversy Explained
Argentina's march to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final has sparked a major "VARgentina" controversy, with fans accusing referees and VAR of favouring the team.
A major controversy has erupted around Argentina's campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Since reaching the knockout stage, social media has been flooded with claims that Argentina is receiving favourable decisions from referees and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.
The nickname "VARgentina" has gone viral, with many fans alleging that Argentina has benefited from penalties, VAR reviews and key decisions that have gone against their opponents. Some fans have even speculated that Lionel Messi's global popularity and Argentina's commercial value could influence decisions, though no evidence has been provided to support these claims.
The controversy began after Argentina's 3-2 Round of 16 win over Egypt. Egypt had a goal ruled out after a VAR review and was denied a penalty, leading Egypt's coach to publicly criticise the refereeing.
The debate grew further in the quarter-final against Switzerland when Swiss striker Breel Embolo received a red card after a VAR review. Many fans and pundits felt the decision was too harsh and changed the course of the match. Argentina won 3-1 and advanced to the semi-finals.
Adding to the speculation, media reports citing Argentine newspaper La Nación said the FBI is reportedly examining certain financial activities of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) in the United States over alleged financial transactions and possible money-laundering concerns. However, there is no public evidence linking this reported inquiry to refereeing decisions or Argentina's World Cup performances.
FIFA has denied allegations of bias and said that referees and VAR officials make decisions independently according to the Laws of the Game.
On 15 July, Argentina defeated England 2-1 in the semi-final and reached the World Cup final. They will face Spain on 20 July at 12:30 AM IST at New York New Jersey Stadium in the United States. If Argentina win, they will become World Cup champions for the second consecutive time after their 2022 victory.
