Indian Cyber Crime Officials Prevent Major Data Leak

The Indian Cyber Crime machinery along with a French security researcher work together to stop a massive data leak of personal documents and Aadhar cards on two government websites.

A French Security Researcher with the Twitter handle Elliot Alderson is well known for exposing security problems in the smartphone OnePlus and the Paytm App. On 10th March 2019, He Tweeted saying that, 2 Indian government websites were leaking 3,05,000 document IDs including Aadhar Cards. He tweeted saying the Indian Government had one week to contact him privately so that he could share the details of the leak responsibly. Since personal information of many individuals were at risk, he warned the government to act immediately.

This issue was discussed by the top officials in the Indian Government.The Authorities then contacted Alderson on Twitter. They worked together and started a top secret operation to identify and stop the leaks. On 18 March 2019 Alderson again Tweeted saying the the personal documents of 3,05,000 people have been secured. He thanked all the officials. He even said that if people work together, great things can be achieved.Senior Inspector General of Police with the Maharashtra Cyber branch responded to the tweet by thanking him for his information.

Alderson had previously said that  Aadhar information is not safe as all the details many Indians are stored in a common server.
