Indian Army Recruits Women Jawans

With the urgent need of women personnel to facilitate swift action by the armed forces, the army has begun online registrations for women jawans in the forces.

The government announced last year, that women would be recruited as soldiers or PBOR (Personnel Below Officer Rank), in the Military Police, in 2019. However, till date, the army has accepted women, only as “Officers”, but has not allowed them to join in the “fighting arms” like infantry, armed corps, artillery, or to serve on warships. There are more than 14 lakh personnel in the armed forces. Out of this the number of women is just 1500 in the Army, 1600 in the Air Force, and 500 in the Navy. There are 65,000 women in the Officer rank in all three wings.

This has resulted in the Army recruiting more women in the forces. 25th, April, the Army began the process to employ women as Jawans, for the first time. They aim to fill 20% of the Military Police with women staff. The Army aims to take 800 women in the Military Police. Every year, they will recruit 50 women personnel.

This will help in investigating cases of rape and molestation. An officer said that they could also be used in crowd control, and frisking of women in disturbed areas.

The Modi government said that officers would be allowed to opt for permanent posts on some other branches of the armed forces like engineers, intelligence etc.On 25th of April, the army began online registration for recruitment of women, in the Military Police. The registration deadline is set for the 8th of June.
