Heavy Rains In Hyderabad Cause Mass Destruction

Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana received heavy rainfall due to the deep depression in the Bay of Bengal.

Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana received heavy rainfall. The streets in Hyderabad were flooded, cars floated in the water, and at least 15 people died in downpour-related incidents. There were power cuts in several areas. This is the first time since 1903 that Hyderabad has witnessed so much rain. The whole of Tuesday 13th October there was heavy rainfall and by Wednesday 14th October 8:30 am the rainfall had doubled. The MeT department issued a yellow alert for Hyderabad which means everyone needs to stay on watch and keep an eye on weather updates. The MeT said the upcoming 12 hours are extremely crucial.

People were asked to stay indoors and the state government declared a holiday on 14th and 15th October. There were many pictures and videos of the damage caused by rains on social media. NDRF and SDRF teams were asked to evacuate people from low-lying areas. From Tolichowki Nadeem colony, over 600 people from 170 homes were rescued using boats. Pictures showed parked cars drowned in the rainwater in some areas and four-wheelers overturned in some areas. Trees and poles too were uprooted.

In a video a man was seen being washed away by the floodwater. He tried holding on to anything to save himself, but the strong currents drove him away. Eye-witnesses screamed but the fear kept them away from helping the man. In a heart-wrenching incident, nine people, including a two-month-old, died last night after a compound wall collapsed. The situation in Telangana is being closely monitored by CM K Chandrasekhar Rao.

In neighboring Andhra Pradesh, 10 people died due to rain-related incidents in the last 48 hours. Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy held a high-level meeting and also ordered compensation for the families. The latest IMD news suggested that other areas like Madhya Maharashtra, south Konkan, Goa, and Coastal and North Karnataka must also be ready for the downpour as the depression has moved westward.
