Govt Takes Action To Stop Child Rapes

The Supreme Court has ordered special courts to be set up in districts with more than 100 cases of child abuse and cases filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The Supreme Court has said that they are ordering special courts to be set up in districts where more than 100 cases of child abuse and cases filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. These courts will only work on cases that fall under POCSO. The SC has revealed that there are 1.5lakh cases open in the courts right now which is 224 cases in each court making it a very slow and painful process for victims. With 33,000 cases registered each year and only 24% of cases, each year being solved there has been a large back up of cases.

The new courts will be funded by the Central Government and they will take care of appointing judges and support staff and make the courts into more child-friendly places.  The SC says some of the blame is on forensic labs that are delaying the results and taking too long to conduct their tests, with evidence getting old and witness also going missing due to long delays. The Supreme Courts intervening in this brings hope that some changes will be made and these cases will be solved much faster.
