Fraudsters Steal Groundwater Worth Rs 73 crores

A builder and some tanker drivers have been arrested for stealing groundwater worth Rs 73 Crores over 11 years. They dug two illegal wells and stole water without anyone knowing.

The Azad Maidan police in South Mumbai have registered an FIR against six people for stealing groundwater worth Rs 73 Crores over 11 years. They did this by digging two wells on the building premises in the Kalbadevi area. They dug two open wells and installed water pumps using an unauthorised power connection. The owner-landlord, Tripuraprasad Nanalal Pandya and two of his company directors Prakash Pandya and Manoj Pandya used fake building plans to build the wells.


With the help of tank owners, Arun Mishra, Shravan Mishra and Dhiraj Mishra they sold water in 6.1 Lakh tankers which each held 10,000 litres. The police said they stole and sold groundwater worth Rs 73.19 Crore from 2006 - 2017 for their own profits.The police filed a case against them. There have been many cases of people stealing municipal water, but this is believed to be the first case of stealing groundwater.
