The Former US President Donald Trump was charged with 34 serious criminal charges in a Manhattan court on 4th April 2023. "Seems so SURREAL -- WOW, they are going to ARREST ME," Trump posted on his Truth Social app as he headed to the courthouse from Trump Tower, where he spent the night after flying from Florida. Trump was placed under arrest ahead of the arraignment and taken to the district attorney's office for formalities before the court proceedings.Police lined the streets while helicopters buzzed in the skies as Trump's motorcade made the drive to court. This was carried live on US networks although cameras were not allowed for the hearing itself. Trump waved at supporters after leaving his car before walking into the court complex. He was not escorted in handcuffs past media cameras as it is done with other defendants.

In the court, Mr Trump, however, has denied any criminal wrongdoing. Trump sat silent for the proceedings that went on for an hour. He only spoke when Judge Juan Merchan asked questions and to enter his not-guilty plea. Paying hush money in America is not illegal.  But the prosecution said Mr Trump has faked business records and broken election laws as he tried to cover up the payments. Each of the charges carries a maximum of four years in prison. According to sources, if proven guilty Trump can be sent to jail for 136 years. If Trump is found guilty, the judge has the authority to provide probation which means he can be let out of the prison but will be continuously observed by the authorities. Mr Trump said nothing even to the reporters as he left court.
He returned immediately to his Florida home, Mar-a-Lago, in the evening. After returning, he held an event which was attended by a huge crowd. He told the crowd, "The only crime I have committed is to fearlessly defend our nation from those who seek to destroy it," He further said that this fake case was brought only to interfere with the upcoming 2024 election and it should be dropped immediately. “Our country is going to hell”, Donald Trump said as the crowd of supporters clapped for him in support as he said that. Mr Bragg, the lawyer who has charged Trump with all the charges, said that, "Everyone stands equal under the law, no matter who you are, we will not normalize serious criminal conduct." Mr Trump also has three other investigations going on against him. These are related to efforts Trump has taken to overturn the 2020 election results, and that he has mis-managed classified documents. There is a lot of controversy on whether such a powerful man like Trump will be found guilty or not. Even if he is found guilty, will he be arrested and sent to jail? We will have to wait and watch.
