Election Commission Seeks Report on NaMo TV
Taking cognizance of the complaints filed by Opposition parties, the Election Commission is investigating NaMo TV news channel allegedly created by the BJP party.
Earlier NaMo TV was a YouTube Channel. On 31st March it was launched on Tata Sky. The BJP party has not taken ownership of the channel, but their social media accounts have encouraged people to watch the channel. Many of the opposing parties such as Congress and AAP have objected to this channel and said that it violates the Election Commission (EC) rules.
The channel is available on Tata Sky as Hindi entertainment channel on number 145 as well as a Hindi news channel on number 512. In response to a Tweet by a Tata Sky user questioning the identity of the channel, Tata Sky said that NaMo TV is a news channel that provides the latest news on National politics. The channel airs speeches and rallies of PM Narendra Modi and interviews of other BJP leaders. Many Tata Sky users claimed that the channel was on their TV list, even though they had not subscribed for it. There are reports that claim, the channel is owned by two Gujaratis. One of them may be Parag Shah who is close to the BJP party. If NaMo TV is a news channel, it requires a license to operate the satellites which are used to beam their programmes to the viewers through the DTH providers.
