Countries Which Have More Than One Capital

Do you know there are several countries around the world which have more than one capital city, where major decision-making takes place?

Right from our early days in school, we were taught that every country has one capital where most of the country's national and international decisions take place. A capital is a city where a region's government is located. This is where government buildings are and where government leaders work. For example, India's capital is Delhi. We have the parliament, the Supreme court and important government offices there. Government leaders live there. Similarly, every state also has a capital and all important government places are in the capital. This helps to effectively government the area and hold meetings. However, do you know there are several countries around the world which have more than one capital? They have a judicial capital, a legislative capital and administrative & Executive Capital. 

Some have only two of these, while some may have all 3.
 

Here are some examples: 

1. South Africa - Pretoria, Cape Town and Bloemfontein

South Africa is a country located in the southern part of the African continent. The Administrative and Executive Capital of South Africa is Pretoria, the Legislative Capital is Cape Town, however the Judicial Capital is Bloemfontein.

2. Sri Lanka - Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte and Colombo

Sri Lanka is a small island situated in the Indian Ocean. Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is the Administrative Capital of Sri Lanka, while the Commercial and Judicial Capital is Colombo.

3. Georgia - Tbilisi and Kutaisi

Georgia is a country situated on the Eastern European continent. Its Official Capital is Tbilisi, while the Legislative Capital is Kutaisi.

4. Malaysia - Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya

Malaysia is a country located in Southeast Asia. It is divided into two parts by the South China Sea. Kuala Lumpur is the Official Capital of Malaysia, while Putrajaya is the Administrative Capital.

5. Netherlands - Amsterdam and The Hague

The Netherlands is a major country in the European continent. The Official Capital of the Netherlands is Amsterdam, while The Hague is Administrative Capital.
