CM Tells Schools to Revoke Ban on Dabbawalas
School Managements in Mumbai have banned Dabbawala services in Mumbai citing security concerns.
More than half the schools in the city have banned Dabbawala services due to security concerns. School Managements fear that entry of unknown tiffin carriers into school premises will pose a danger for school students. It will add to the burden of the schools as they will have to monitor and scan the tiffins and Dabbawalas. For the last two months, the various Dabbawalas Associations have expressed their concern about this ban. The Dabbawalas say that the ban is part of a money making scam by canteen contractors. They said that they provide quality home food to more than 2 lakh people in Mumbai daily.
It is unfair that they are losing on business. This is why they approached Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis for help. The CM and Education Minister had directed the police and government authorities to help Dabawallah provide food to schools. The schools however said that Dabbawalahs will be allowed only if there is a fool-proof system in place. BJP MLA Ashish Shelar had written a letter urging the schools to allow the entry of Dabbawalas in schools. He said that the Dabbawalas heritage dates back to 1890. The authorities will meet later this week to discuss the matter further.
