Big Earthquake in Myanmar: Over 1,700 Dead, 3,400 Injured

A powerful 7.7 earthquake in Myanmar caused massive destruction, over 1,700 deaths, and rescue challenges, with global aid efforts underway.

On 28th March 2025, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.7 hit Myanmar’s Sagaing Region, causing massive destruction. This was the strongest earthquake in Myanmar since 1912 and one of the deadliest in recent times. The tremors were also felt in Thailand and China.

Videos on social media show buildings and bridges collapsing, highlighting the seriousness of the disaster. One video shows a tall building under construction crashing down in just a few minutes. In Bangkok, tall buildings shook, and water spilled out of rooftop pools. The earthquake also affected China’s Yunnan province, where hundreds of homes were damaged.

Reports say that about 1,700 people have died, over 3,400 are injured, and around 300 are missing. The US Geological Survey (USGS) warns that the death toll may rise to 10,000. In Bangkok, 17 people have lost their lives, with many missing after a 30-floor building collapsed.

Rescue Efforts Face Challenges

Rescue operations in Myanmar have been very difficult due to damaged roads, collapsed bridges, and broken communication systems. The situation is made worse by the ongoing civil war, which started in 2021 when the military took over the government. The war has destroyed homes, hospitals, and roads, making life even harder for the people.

Why Did This Earthquake Happen?

Myanmar is one of the most earthquake-prone countries because it lies where four tectonic plates meet. These plates are always moving, which causes earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Myanmar is also close to the ‘Ring of Fire,’ a dangerous area where most of the world’s earthquakes occur.

India and Other Countries Send Help

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and announced ‘Operation Brahma’ to support Myanmar. India has already sent two naval ships with 10 tonnes of relief supplies, including rations, tents, medicines, sleeping bags, rescue teams, and a fully equipped field hospital. Two more ships will be sent soon.

US President Donald Trump has also promised aid, saying, "We will be helping." The United Nations has provided $5 million in relief, and many countries have sent rescue teams after Myanmar’s military government requested help.

Scientists warn that China may face a big earthquake between 2021 and 2030, and even India has experienced minor tremors recently. This reminds us that countries must stand together and support each other in times of natural disasters.
