BEST Electric Double-Decker Bus Starts in Mumbai
The first electric double-decker bus in Mumbai is expected to start its operations for the public in September 2022.
In 2022, Electric vehicles including scooters, cars & buses can be easily seen on the roads. Now, the first electric double-decker bus in Mumbai is expected to start its operations for the public in September 2022.
According to Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) officials, a prototype (for testing - sample) electric double-decker bus is ready with all necessary permissions. The BEST has awarded a contract to a private company for the supply of 900 electric buses in phases, with 50 percent of these buses to be delivered before March 2023. According to sources, the first double-decker electric bus was likely to be unveiled on 18 August 2022.
However, the first electric double-decker bus is expected to undergo some trials after delivery. Hence, it will hit the roads for the public from September. The BEST has had 900 conventional double-decker buses in its fleet, but the numbers steadily reduced over the years to just around 50 buses left now.Five Buses are used for open deck heritage tours, while the remaining buses operate on various routes of the city. Meanwhile, currently, BEST carries around 32 lakh passengers per day with a fleet of over 3,500 buses. The addition of 900 double-decker electric buses will definitely add to the public transport facility in Mumbai.
