Auto Driver Arrested for Killing Jharkhand Judge

The Jharkhand police arrest two persons, including the driver of the autorickshaw that “deliberately” knocked down fatally Uttam Anand, Additional Sessions Judge.

Uttam Anand, Additional Sessions Judge of Dhanbad in Jharkhand, had gone for a morning jog. He was hardly 500-metres away from his home.

However an auto knocked him down and drove off. A passer-by took him to a hospital but he was declared dead on arrival. After the post-mortem, his body was sent to his home in Hazaribagh district for last rites. Initially, it was thought to be a hit-and-run case. However, CCTV footage of the incident went viral. In the video, you can see that the road was empty and the judge was walking on the side of the road. The auto has enough space to drive straight but it takes a left, runs over the judge and drives off. After the video went viral, many said that this was not a mistake and the auto driver deliberately ran over the judge.

Addressing a press conference, Dhanbad’s Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar said, “A case has been registered. We managed to arrest Lakhan Verma, the autorickshaw driver, and another person, Rahul Verma. The auto rickshaw used in the crime was also seized. A 14-member special investigation team has been created for the case.” The judge was hearing two high-profile murder cases. One was about the theft of coal and its illegal sales. The other case is not known. The police are also investigating if he was killed in connection to the case.
