With the coronavirus pandemic all over the world, everyone was at home. Being at home, all the time, there was also a lot of focus on health and fitness. Many people started exercising at home. One type of exercise is a plank. In the plank the person has to maintain the position for a long time. Plank is very very beneficial for the overall strength of the body. It strengthens the shoulders, arms, abdominal muscles, etc. Plank is not an easy exercise. Some people cannot maintain their position for a minute. George Hood from the US had the Guinness World Record for doing the longest time in the abdominal plank position by a male for 8 hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds. He achieved this in February last year. However, on 6th August 2021 a man named  Daniel Scali from Australia broke this record and set a new Guinness World Record for being in the plank position for 9 hours 30 minutes and 1 second.

Scali suffers from a condition called Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) because of which he has almost constant and excess pain and inflammation in his left arm. The slightest pressure, movement, soft touch, water or wind aggravates the pain. When he was 12, Scali met with an accident and developed CRPS. To overcome the pain, Scali started training himself. He practiced for many months for his record. Having his own experiences with pain, he wanted to attempt the record in order to raise awareness for CRPS. During his attempt this time, he wore a compression sleeve on the region of his arm affected by CRPS. It helped him slightly but Scali said that despite the sleeve, he experienced searing pain during the exercise. A video shared by Guinness World Records showed that after 7 hours, Scali’s body felt slight vibration and shaking but he remained focused on the goal. The video has been liked by more than 3.50 lakh users and received a lot of admiration and praise. Scali said, “When I finished the plank, there was an emotion of joy. I’ve achieved the goal, I’ve achieved my main objective of bringing awareness to CRPS, and I’ve achieved the record.” Due to this condition, the world record notched by him has garnered much more respect and admiration.
