Assam Cops Strip & Beat Three Sisters
In a case of extreme inhumane treatment, the Darrang District police brutally tortured three women and caused one of them to miscarry and lose her child.
On 8th September 2019, In Assam’s Darrang district the police entered the house of Minuwara Begum in Sixmile area in Guwahati. The police pointed a gun at her and her husband and threatened to shoot them. She and her two younger sisters were then picked up and taken to the Burha police station in connection with a kidnapping case.A case was filed against the womens’ brother because he had ran away with a woman from a different caste.
Minuwara was 2-months pregnant. The three women were stripped and brutally tortured inside a police station. The pregnant woman lost her baby due to bleeding caused by the beating.This incident took place on September 8 but the media came to know about it only on Tuesday, September 17.Minuwara then filed a complaint with the Darrang district Superintendent of Police on September 10, and said that Mahendra Sarma a police officer and a lady constable kept torturing them. They even touched the womens’ private parts.
The officer pointed his gun towards them and warned them not to inform the police and made them sign a blank paper as well. The women were beaten with sticks and shoes. Minuwara’s husband was thrown in jail as well. The Assam State Commission for Women has taken up the matter and Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered the Police to investigate the matter thoroughly. The officerthe lady constables have been suspended by Assam Police. The police are now saying that nothing was done to the women.
