America Supreme Court Bans Abortion?
The American Supreme Court has changed a constitutional right granted in a landmark 1973 decision, called Roe vs Wade, which had earlier legalised abortion across the country.
Does a woman have the right to choose abortion? This question has been a debate for many years in the USA and around the world. Before 1973 many states in the USA had made abortion illegal. It was banned.
However in 1973 there was a case called Roe vs Wade. Jane Roe was a fictional name given to Norma McCorvey, who was 22 years old and unmarried, unemployed, and pregnant for the third time in 1969, when she sought to have an abortion in the state of Texas. However in Texas abortion was illegal so she filed a case against Henry Wade was the head district attorney (judge) in Dallas, Texas. of Dallas County, Texas.
She said that she has a right to decide whether to abort or not as it is her body and the government can not make decision. The case then went to the American Supreme Court.
The SC then announced that a woman's decision to have an abortion during the first three months of her pregnancy must be left to her and her doctor. It is said that it is abortion was a constitutional right of every woman. Though some states had banned abortion, because of the SC’s decision it became legal. But the states could decide after how many months abortion can be allowed. This was big decision. As women who get preganant from rape, when brother-father rape, or women who wanted a small family or women who wanted to work or study further, etc. could abort the child. However now the American SC said that abortion is not a constitution right. Now the states are free to decide whether to make it illegal or not. With the judgment reversed, at least 13 states have laws that allow them to ban abortion immediately or within 30 days.
These laws would have exceptions if the life or health of the woman is in danger. But many do not make exceptions for pregnancies that are the result of rape or illegal sex between the mebers of the same family. Because of this people in America are on the roads to protest against the decision of the Supreme court over the right to abort a pregnancy.
