A person named Javed, in Allahabad, was arrested in March, for stealing a cow, and slaughtering it, along with some other people.

When hearing his case yesterday, Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court stated that the cow is a symbol of Indian culture. It should be declared as the national animal, and gau Raksha (cow protection) should be a fundamental right of the Hindus. Javed was denied bail by the court.

Referring to mythology while giving the order, he mentioned that scientists believe that the cow is the only animal that inhales and exhales oxygen.

He also said that the cow was an important part of our culture, as it has been seen in the Puranas, the Shastras, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. He also said that the cow is of economic value, and it is the “backbone” of farming and other daily uses.

Justice yadav went on to say that the Parliament should make a law to take strict action against those who slaughter cows. He said that cows are a symbol of Hindu faith and culture, and said that even majority of Muslims in the country support a nationwide ban on cow slaughter.

Justice Yadav said that when the faith and culture of the country suffer injury, the country becomes weak.
