Ragging is the term actually used for "initiation ritual" practiced in higher education institutions. It is followed in many parts of the world. Sometimes ragging is simple. The new students are made to dance and sing or do mimicry by the senior students. But sometimes, ragging involves abuse, humiliation, or harassment of  junior students. It often beocmes dangerous wherein the newcomers may be subjected to psychological or physical torture. In 2009, the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India imposed rules upon Indian universities to help stop ragging and launched a toll-freE 'anti-ragging helpline'.As per the Anti-Ragging Cell of the UGC, ragging has ruined countless innocent lives and careers. To stop ragging from educational institutions in the country, the University Grants Commision (UGC) has banned ragging. If there is a complaint about it, then those responsible are punished and fined. Sometimes they are even suspended from the college.

In spite of these strict rules there are incidents of ragging coming in from many parts of the country. The latest is from Haldwani, Uttarakhand. A video from a government medical college in Haldwani, Uttarakhand is going viral. In the video, 27 male students with their heads shaved and hands tied at their backs are walking in a queue around the campus. The video shows some of these students wearing lab coats and face masks. They are avoiding any eye contact and are chanting “Doctor Sahab Namaskar”. A guard is also seen keeping the students in line. Videos of the ragging went viral on social media, triggering shock and anger. Disturbed by the visuals, netizens called out the administration of the medical college, demanding action against the accused students responsible for the humiliation of their juniors.

Principal of the college, Arun Joshi, said, “No complaint has been received in the case. Often, students shave their heads themselves. It is not always linked to ragging. Many students join college with military haircuts. This incident was not unusual. The students have given different reasons for shaving their heads. Some said it was because of the heat and some cited a dandruff problem. However, it is possible that they were under pressure to give such reasons.”

TOI tried to reach out to students of the college but no one was willing to make any comment about the incident. After the video went viral, the Haldwani Government Medical College administration has called for a probe into the matter. If they find that it was ragging, then they will recommend the punishment.

Earlier in 2019 too this college was in news as 7 students were suspended and were made to pay a fine.

Ragging is not allowed and there is punishment for it. If any of you face such things in your college, you should complain to the Principal, or the management or to the Anti Ragging Cell of the college. Most colleges have an anti ragging committee.
