97 People Arrested in Jodhpur Violence

On the evening of 2nd May, just a few Hours before Eid, communal tension broke out in Jodhpur leading to stone pelting.

Now that cases of communal violence between Hindus & Muslim across different parts of the country have become a daily news story, Yet one another case of communal violence has taken place in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

On the evening of 2nd May, just a few Hours before Eid, communal tension broke out in Jodhpur leading to stone pelting. According to reports the violence started when Members of the muslim community were putting Eid flags near the statue of freedom fighter Balmukund Bissa. This led to a fight as members of the hindu community claimed that a saffron flag, which they had put up had gone missing. According to the sources, this heated fight between the two communities soon turned into stone pelting and violent clashes. However Police reached the spot to control the situation during which five policemen were injured. Police had to use tear gas bomb shells to get rid of the mob.  The situation was brought under control with heavy deployment of police. The tension re-escalated after the Namaz of Eid on Tuesday morning when some people pelted stones near the Jalori Gate. To bring the situation under control, the Jodhpur deputy commissioner of police issued orders imposing a curfew till May 4 midnight along with suspending mobile internet services. Mobile internet services were suspended in the area to prevent the spread of rumours, fake information and hate speech which might lead to communal clashes.

Following this, The Chief Minister of Rajasthan - Ashok Gehlot condemned this incident and requested for peace in the state. He also held a high level meeting sending two of his ministers along with two officers to the crime scene directing them to take strict action against the ones who were involved in the violence. However, more than 97 People have been arrested so far and a case has been registered against them. Later as per the regular practice, Congress started blaming BJP and BJP started blaming congress for the event.
