2 Women in MP Beaten for Talking with Boys

On 22 June, in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, two sisters aged 19 & 20 from a tribal community were beaten brutally by their family members for talking to their maternal uncle’s sons on the phone. The case came to light when a video of the incident surfaced online. In the video that was shot by bystanders, the two sisters can be seen begging for mercy as they are kicked and beaten with sticks and stones. They were dragged by their hair and beaten by men and women. The viral video reached the police on June 25.

Initially the victims were initially fearful of registering a complaint. One of the women was then brought to the police station and the police convinced her to give a statement on the basis of which they registered a complaint. The police also inspected the site. Medical examination of both women was conducted.The police have arrested seven people however, they are already out on bail. 

Only a few days ago, a similar incident surfaced in Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh. A woman was unhappy with her husband, so she left and went to her father’s house. However her father and brothers were furious that she left her husband’s house. Her father and brothers tied her to a tree and thrashed her brutally as punishment. A video was recorded in this case too and it went viral on social media. A complaint has been registered and an investigation is going on.
