International Day Of Persons With Disabilities 2021: Theme, History, Significance And More!

Today is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD)! It was first announced in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly and is celebrated every year on 3 December. This day is to raise awareness about the global population of disabled people and their well-being. According to the United Nations (UN), over one billion people in this world are suffering from some kind of disability. 80% of the people with disabilities belong to developing nations. The theme of International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2021 is "Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post- COVID-19 world".

Ever since, Coronavirus spread around the world, people with disabilities have suffered a lot. For example, the Deaf face communication issues because of masks, they had to depend on families for important information as TV was not accessible, people with disabilities who require therapy like physiotherapy, speech therapy, etc were not able to go to their doctors, Deaf-Blind people faced a hard as because of social distancing they could not use tactile signs, etc. This year’s theme’s objective is to make the post-covid world an inclusive & accessible place for all people with disabilities. According to the UN this should be done by including Deaf leaders, Deaf blind leaders, leaders with physical disabilities, etc. taking their suggestions and making improvements. President Ram Nath Kovind will confer the National Awards for outstanding work towards empowerment of persons with disabilities at the Vigyan Bhavan in Delhi.
