Put Your Phone Away Before Bedtime!

Using your phone at night can impact your health. See the video to know more.

It’s the bedtime routine for so many of us: Hop into the pajamas, flip the lights off, crawl into bed and then… reach for the cell phone. Our smartphone mostly rests right next to us or even under the pillow every night when we go to sleep. We are able to answer calls, texts and emails immediately. And isn’t that the best part about technology? Always being connected and never truly shutting down or logging off? We feed so much information to our brain the whole day, so in the night, we sleep and put off our minds. We should do the same thing with our phones too. Numerous studies have found that using your phone before bed is harmful to your overall health.

1. It keeps your mind psychologically engaged

Checking your phone stimulates the brain so we are more active and awake. Even just a quick check can engage your brain and delay sleep. Your mind can stay active and engaged long after you’ve scrolled through Instagram or responded to a few work emails. For example: If you just received a strongly worded email or saw a Facebook post you didn’t agree with. It’s going to be more difficult for you to relax and go to sleep. Going to bed and falling asleep should be a peaceful, happy and relaxing experience. Engaging with your phone at bedtime can negatively impact those feelings. Since you spent that extra time staying awake reading emails instead of sleeping, now you're going to be more tired and less alert for the next day. And who wants to be less aware and more sluggish throughout the day?

2. The blue light from the screen harmful to eyes

The blue light that your smartphone emits is not only bad for your vision, but it’s bad for your brain too. The blue light emitted by the cell phone screen lessens)  the production of the hormones that controls your sleep-wake cycle.  So when the hormone is low,  you can experience insomnia, tiredness during the day and irritability.

Now, you’re probably wondering, “Without my phone, what am I supposed to do before bed?” Don’t worry! Here are some tips and advice to help you get to sleep.

Stop using electronic devices 30 minutes before bed (Book)

Experts recommend that you should stop using electronic devices, like your cellphone, at least 30 minutes before bedtime. Instead, grab the book and start reading before bed. You’ll be surprised with how much more quickly you fall asleep and how much better you’ll feel the next day.

Put your phone away in another room

Putting your phone in the kitchen, bathroom anywhere to charge overnight will help discourage you from checking it during the night. If you’re worried that you may miss a call in case of an emergency, set it so that it only rings when certain people are calling, but still place it out of bed and out of reach — just in case you get tempted.

I have now told you about two health issues caused due to using your phone at bedtime, and have also given tips and advice to help you get to sleep. Go ahead and try them.
