One of the most popular street foods today, the yummy dumplings which are available everywhere in India.

However, according to health experts, momos can be dangerous to health and cause long-term damage to the body.

Here are a few reasons why you should refrain from momos, especially from roadside eateries, that do not care much for health and hygiene.

Momos are made up of refined flour (maida) and there are three main issues with refined flour:

  • The consumption of refined flour raises blood sugar and insulin, which can cause diabetes.

  • Refined flour has very fewer nutrients and contains harmful additives

  • Refined flour removes healthier foods from the diet.

Refined flour is extensively used in making dough for momos and lacks fibre which causes constipation.

These effects of refined flour can cause severe blood sugar swings, which over time can significantly increase the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular (heart) disease.

It also adds to health problems like weight gain, obesity, hypertension (high blood pressure), and cancer.

Also, since most momos are eaten from roadside cafes and eateries, the fillings used are usually not washed, cut, or used properly.

According to many reports, meat can be expired and infected with several bacteria and viruses that can cause infections like urinary tract infection, stomach infection, vomiting, and even stomach cramps.

Even if the vegetables like cabbage and carrots that are not washed properly can cause stomach flu, diarrhoea, etc. Cabbage, if not cooked properly, can have a tapeworm which can reach the brain and grow there, causing a life-threatening condition.

Moreover, the spicy accompaniment, along with momos, the red chutney, is made with grilled peppers, chilies, and tomatoes. However, most of the roadside vendors use cost effective powdered chilies which can cause severe problems like piles.
