Wrestler Sushil Kumar Arrested in Murder Case

Evading arrest for nearly three weeks, Olympic medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar was nabbed on Sunday 23rd May and remanded in police custody for six days for the murder of wrestler Sagar Rana.

Indian Wrestler Sushil Kumar was involved in a fight, which led to the death of another wrestler Sagar Rana and severe assault of 2 others. After Rana’s death, a Delhi Court issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Sushil Kumar and the Delhi police announced a Rs 1 lakh reward for information leading to the arrest of Kumar & Rs 50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of his associate Ajay Kumar. However, for 3 weeks since the murder of Rana, Sushil Kumar has evaded arrest from the police. The police have been raiding several places in Delhi and its surrounding cities, and neighbouring states, to arrest the wrestler. Finally on 23rd May yesterday, both Sushil and Ajay were arrested in Delhi’s Mundka area. Ironically, all this unfolded on World Wrestling Day. The stockily-built athlete, who used to be wrapped in the tricolour after winning medals for the nation, had his face masked by a towel and both hands held by the Delhi Police.

Sushil was physically produced in court. During the court proceedings, the police said he needs to be in jail for 12 days so that police can interrogate him to find out the reason why he killed Sagar Rana. The police also said that Sushil had asked his friend to record a video while Sagar Rana and his friends were being beaten up. This is because Sushil wanted to establish his fear in the wrestling community. However the court ordered that Sushil Kumar and his associate Ajay Kumar would stay in jail for 6 days.
