WhatsApp Pay Finally Launches in India

After being stuck in beta mode for over two-and-a-half years, WhatsApp has secured all the approval to launch the UPI payment transactions in a graded manner.

After being stuck in beta mode for over two-and-a-half years, WhatsApp has secured all the approval to launch the UPI payment transactions in a graded manner. Since February 2018 during the beta testing mode, WhatsApp was allowed to have only 1 million users to test their payment transaction service. Now after securing approvals, in the first half of the launch, WhatsApp can have up to 20 million users. As of now, Google Pay and Walmart-owned PhonePe, have a large chunk of the UPI business in India. Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, etc have for a long time feared WhatsApp’s entry in mobile payment transactions. This is because WhatsApp, which has 400 million monthly active users in India. Now that it has started UPI payments, they will be able to draw more customers.
