Women Demand liquor Ban in Karnataka

Karnataka women demand a complete ban of liquor in the state.

On 19 January 2,000 women from Chitradurga district of Karnataka decided to march on foot, towards the Vidhana Soudha. The women took up this initiative, after getting fed up of alcoholism affecting their family members.

On 27 January they reached the Vidhana Soudha. They wanted Chief Minister H.D Kumaraswamy to band alcohol and single-digit lotteries in the state. In 2006 he had banned alcohol, but the government lifted the ban in a few years. The women thought this time, the CM would bring back the ban on alcohol. This time, the CM did not listen to the women’s demands.

One of the reasons is that state receives a big amount of tax from these liquor companies. The CM also did not approve the ban because of the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. He is scared that the ban will lead to lesser votes in his favor.
