Women Bikers Harassed On Bengaluru Road

Women bikers were harassed by a father son duo for stopping on the road near their house in Bengaluru.

On 5th March 2023 a bike rally was organized in Bengaluru to mark International Women’s Day which was on 8th March. Two women bikers Sharon Samuel and Priyanka Prasad were heading home after a bike rally. They stopped on Bengaluru’s NICE Road to drink water. A father and his son, Manjunath, allegedly yelled at them from across the street.

Manjunath can be heard asking the women to leave, claiming that they were blocking his property’s gate even though it was across the street. Manjunath told them to go ahead and stop near the toll there. He said it was his property and it was his passage to the gate. He crosses from here and goes. He puts his hand on one of the rider’s bikes and pulls out the key. Manjunath said that he had not done anything wrong since it was a case of the women encroaching their property and that he had handed over the bike key to the police.

The women said, “For 45 minutes, we stood in the sun. We felt so threatened and helpless. After trying the police control room several times, a police patrolling vehicle assisted them but the women said they had to wait for seven hours before the police registered an FIR.  They shared, “A lot of people take inspiration from us, and now, they’ll think it’s not safe. This is why women don’t ride. It’s not because it’s difficult ..to handle the bike; it’s the attitude of the people that’s the problem.”
