Will FDA Now Inspect Ganpati Mandals For Prasad?

Maharashtra FDA has launched pre-festival food-safety inspections for Ganpati mandals, covering prasad, Mahaprasad, bhandara and annadaan to prevent food-safety risks.

Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has introduced a more systematic food-safety inspection plan for Ganeshotsav. Under FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe’s Festival Enforcement Calendar, officials will inspect food served at large Ganpati mandals, including prasad, Mahaprasad, annadaan and bhandara.

Ganeshotsav has been classified as a Level 1 festival, meaning inspections begin 21 days before the festival. The FDA will check ingredients, storage, preparation and hygiene, including milk, sweets, edible oil, food colours, dry fruits, besan, water and ice.

The FDA has also issued a 21-point SOP for Ganpati mandals and introduced a 7-day advance notice for large community meals, allowing officials to plan inspections and collect samples.

Reports say the system could cover around 12,000 public Ganesh mandals across Mumbai.
One major mandal, GSB Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal in Wadala, serves Mahaprasad to around 22,000–25,000 people daily. There is no report that the mandal was found serving unsafe food. The organisers have said they are cooperating with the FDA and have increased their focus on hygiene.

The FDA’s approach was also seen at ISKCON’s Hare Krishna Land in Juhu, where officials found issues including pest infestation, clogged drains, water accumulation and improper food storage. Licences of three food establishments were temporarily suspended, with corrective measures later initiated.

The FDA says the goal is to move from reactive inspections to preventive food-safety checks, identifying risks before they lead to food-safety incidents.
