Delhi Protest: Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Detained After 8-Hour Sit-In
A major opposition protest took place in Delhi on 6 October over Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.
Opposition parties have alleged that the voter-list revision could remove eligible voters from the electoral rolls. They have called this “vote chori” and demanded that the SIR process be stopped, wrongly removed names be restored and CEC Gyanesh Kumar resign. The Election Commission and BJP have rejected these allegations.
INDIA Bloc March to Election Commission
The INDIA bloc organised a march from the Parliament area towards the Election Commission headquarters, Nirvachan Sadan. The opposition wanted to meet the Election Commissioners and submit their concerns about the voter-list revision.
However, Delhi Police stopped the march with barricades. Police said the route was not authorised and security restrictions were in place around the area. Several opposition MPs then sat on the road and continued their protest.
Rahul Gandhi Climbs Police Barricade
During the protest, Rahul Gandhi climbed onto a police barricade near the NITI Aayog area while holding the Tricolour. He later climbed down and moved towards a police bus where Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was present.
Rahul then went towards the nearby Akashvani Bhavan, which is close to the Election Commission headquarters. He entered the premises with his security personnel, followed by Priyanka Gandhi and other opposition leaders.
8-Hour Sit-In at Akashvani Bhavan
Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other leaders sat under a tree inside the Akashvani Bhavan compound.
Rahul said he wanted to meet the Election Commissioners and questioned where the opposition should protest if it was not allowed to reach the Election Commission. Police asked the protesters to leave the premises, but they refused. The sit-in continued for more than eight hours.
Police Detain Protesters
At around 8 pm, Delhi Police moved into the premises to clear the area. Rahul Gandhi was physically removed from the site and detained. Priyanka Gandhi and several other opposition leaders were also detained.
Akhilesh Yadav, Abhishek Banerjee, Derek O’Brien and John Brittas were among the opposition leaders detained during the protest.
Delhi Police said around 250 people, including about 50 MPs, were detained during the later phase of the protest. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and the other detained leaders were released later that night.
The protest has added to the ongoing political dispute over the Election Commission, the SIR exercise and the opposition's allegations of irregularities in voter lists. The Election Commission and BJP have rejected the allegations.
