Why Are Some Airports Closed Today? Here’s What’s Happening!
Many airports are closed for safety after military action, and while many airports are open, flights may still be delayed or cancelled due to the nationwide impact.
Today, many travellers in India saw their plans change as several big airports were closed for a few hours. Let’s understand why this happened.
Mumbai Airport’s Planned Break
Mumbai Airport, one of the busiest in India, stopped all flights between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM today. But don’t worry — this was already planned. Before the rainy season starts every year, the airport takes a short break for maintenance. During this time, workers clean, repair, and check the runways to make sure everything is safe during monsoon.
Airports Closed Due to Security Reasons
Apart from Mumbai, many other airports in northern, western, and central India were also closed — but for a different reason. As ISH News reported earlier, India carried out a military operation called Operation Sindoor after a recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir.
On May 7, 2025, the Indian Air Force targeted terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Because of this, the government closed several airports in sensitive areas for safety. This step also helps the Air Force manage the airspace during such a serious time.
Which Airports Are Affected?
Around 25 to 27 airports have stopped civilian flights until May 10. These include Srinagar, Jammu, Leh, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Jamnagar, Bhuj, Rajkot, Porbandar, and others. So far, over 400 flights have been cancelled or delayed.
What About Other Cities Like Delhi or Bangalore?
Airports in cities like Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bangalore are not closed, but passengers are still facing delays. Because of the airspace restrictions, many flights are being re-routed, causing changes in schedule.
What Should Travellers Do?
If you are travelling soon, especially from affected regions, check your flight status before leaving home. Even in cities where airports are open, there may be delays or cancellations.
In Short:
Many airports are closed after India’s military action. Even open airports may see delays. So, double-check your flight before you travel!
