Bird flu or avian influenza is a viral infection that occurs in birds, but has the potential to affect humans and other animals. Bird Flu was first detected in a Geese in China. Infected birds have to be killed to make sure the virus doesn’t spread. Migratory Birds are carriers of this virus and responsible for its spread.

Infected birds have the virus in their droppings, saliva and mucus, in the air as droplets or dust when the infected bird flaps or shakes. This is how it spreads to other birds and also spreads to cats, dogs,  pigs  and horses.  If humans touch an infected bird then touch their nose, eyes or mouth they can get infected. People in close contact with birds and livestock are at risk. In 1997, for the first time a human was infected with bird flu in Hong Kong. Since then, there have been many strains of the virus.

According to WHO, the virus is sensitive to heat and the virus is killed and does not spread. This is why it can’t spread through cooked food or from person to person. Because of the Bird Flu sales of chicken & Eggs have reduced considerably. Animal Husbandry Minister Giriraj Singh Tweeted that it is safe to eat fully cooked eggs and chicken.

The virus causes respiratory problems, fever, cough, cold, sore throat, stomach pain and diarrhoea.

Experts say that after the first case in Hong Kong in 1997, bird flu infected 80 more people and killed one. However chances of spread of the virus through humans are low.
