Violent Clashes Breaks Out Between BJP and West Bengal Police

A clash broke out between BJP workers and West Bengal Police outside the Raniganj railway station in Bengal.

A clash broke out between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers and West Bengal Police outside the Raniganj railway station in Bengal as workers left for Kolkata to take part in Nabanna Abhiyan on 13th of September. Nabanna is the name of the state secretariat in West Bengal. The “Nabanna Abhiyan” is the first major campaign by the BJP after the party’s defeat in the state elections last year. The protest is aimed against the corruption” by the TMC, and aims to target on the recent action against top TMC leaders by Central investigative agencies The BJP protest gained more support after TMC Minister  Partha Chatterjee was removed from all government and party posts in July after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said it had recovered over Rs 40 crore in cash from premises allegedly linked to him. BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, told reporters that “at least 1.5 lakh BJP workers were stopped by the police despite this being a programme that was announced earlier”. Police also took many BJP workers into preventive custody. 

Meanwhile, Police made heavy deployment of police personnel to stop BJP's Nabanna Abhiyan. The borders of Kolkata have been covered off with tight security to prevent the procession. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul on Monday, 12th of September said, “It is not just BJP's protest, but the protest of all people of Bengal. Mamata Banerjee has to answer why her government has cheated the people of Bengal. "Following the violent clashes, the West Bengal High Court asked the state’s Home Secretary to submit a report by 19th September on why BJP supporters were prevented from attending the protest march.The court also ordered the state to ensure that no unnecessary arrest or detention is made in connection with the rally. The National Commission for Women, meanwhile, sought an explanation within seven days from the Kolkata Police Commissioner over a video posted on Twitter purportedly of “Meena Devi Purohit, senior BJP leader, brutally assaulted by men police officers”. BJP said 363 of the party’s workers were injured during the clashes, and 35 workers and leaders have been hospitalised. The condition of three of them is critical.
