Violence At Assam-Mizoram Border

There is no clear line indicating the Assam-Mizoram border in some areas.  Residents of Lailapur in Assam went and constructed some temporary huts in Vairengte which is in Mizoram. Residents of Vairengte became angry and set the huts on fire. This led to major fights between residents on both sides of the border. Many were severely injured. The two states have deployed many security personnel at the border. Hundreds of vehicles including trucks carrying essential commodities to Mizoram are stranded at the border. The situation is now under control in the area.


Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office and the Union Home Ministry. He also spoke to Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga on the phone and stressed on joint efforts to solve the border issues peacefully in a friendly manner. The Mizoram government also reached out to the central government to defuse the situation. A meeting will be chaired by Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla today 19th October. At this meeting officials from Assam & Mizoram will be present to discuss the situation.
