An elderly man died in Rajasthan’s Alwar after a cow that came into the path of a Vande Bharat train hit him. The accident took place on Tuesday 18th April 2023 evening near the city’s Kalimori gate when an 82-year-old man was urinating near the railway tracks. Around 8.30 pm, a Delhi-Ajmer Vande Bharat Express train collided with a cow that had come on to the tracks. The cow was flung about 30 metres away due to the crash and hit Sharma who was exactly 30 metres away and he died on the spot. Another person standing nearby escaped being hit by the cow. Officials from the Government Railway Police arrived at the spot and took Sharma’s body to the general hospital. After a postmortem examination, his body was handed over to his relatives.

Sharma worked as an electrician in the Indian Railways. He retired approximately more than 20 years ago. In the past two years, there have been several instances of Vande Bharat trains colliding with cattle on railway tracks. The most number of such incidents have taken place on the Mumbai-Gujarat route. Union Railways Minister (Ashwini Vaishnav) said crashes with cattle on the tracks is unavoidable and this had been kept in mind while designing the trains, that run at a speed of approximately 130-160 kmph. The Western Railways has decided to put metal fencing along the over 620km-long Mumbai-Ahmedabad route to stop animals from straying onto the tracks and prevent accidents in the future.
