UP: Doctors Remove 2 kg Hairball From 21-Year-Old Girl’s Stomach
Doctors in Bareilly removed 2kg of hair from the stomach of a 21-year-old girl who had been eating her own hair for 16 years due to a rare psychological disorder called trichophagia.
In a shocking medical case, doctors in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, removed 2kg of human hair from the stomach of a 21-year-old girl during surgery. The girl was rushed to the Bareilly district hospital on 20th September 2024, after suffering from severe stomach pain, inability to eat solid food, and vomiting liquids.
A CT scan revealed her stomach was full of hair. When questioned, the girl admitted she had been secretly pulling and eating her hair since she was 5 years old. This condition, known as *trichophagia* or *Rapunzel Syndrome*, is a psychological disorder where a person eats their own hair.
The surgery was performed on 26th September 2024. Dr. MP Singh, one of the surgeons, said the hair had filled her stomach and part of her intestines. He explained that while trichophagia is a rare disorder, it can lead to dangerous health problems and sometimes requires surgery.
The hospital in-charge, Dr. Alka Sharma, confirmed that such cases are very rare, and no similar surgery had been performed in the last 20 years. The girl is now safe and receiving counseling to help her manage the disorder.
