Trump Takes Big U-Turn on H1B Visa

Trump’s new H-1B visa fee has angered Indians and even confused his supporters after a policy U-turn. The move has fueled racism as Indian Americans earn more than most groups in the US.

Trump’s $100,000 H-1B Visa Fee Sparks Outrage Among Indians

US President Donald Trump recently made headlines once again with a controversial decision. Just a day after praising India and PM Modi, Trump signed an executive order imposing a $100,000 fee on new H-1B visa applications. The H-1B visa is widely used by highly skilled professionals, and since over 70% of holders are Indians, this move has been seen as targeting them.

For many Indian professionals, the H-1B visa is a pathway to better income and opportunities in the US. This sudden announcement has crushed the hopes of thousands planning to move. Experts also warn that the US may suffer as well, losing access to global talent that drives innovation.

Initially, Trump and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the fee would be annual and even apply to current visa holders. But backlash followed when the White House Press Secretary clarified that it is only a one-time fee, applying only to new applicants not renewals or existing visa holders.

This U-turn angered many Trump supporters who wanted a complete block on Indians. Racist comments flooded social media, especially after the Indian Embassy in Washington posted a helpline for citizens. Many users wrote hateful remarks, reflecting growing racism against Indians in the US.

A major reason is economic resentment. Studies show Indian Americans earn an average of $100,500 per year the highest among ethnic groups, compared to $59,900 for White Americans. PM Modi, in response, stressed the need for a self-reliant “Aatma Nirbhar” India.
