Taliban Captures Kabul & President Ghani Runs Away

The Taliban were in control of Afghanistan on Monday after President Ashraf Ghani fled the country and conceded the terror group had won the 20-year war.

For the last 20 years there was a war going on between the Taliban - a terrorist group and the Afghanistan government. The war was because the Taliban wanted to capture the entire Afghanistan country. They had first captured Kabul - capital of Afghanistan - in 1996. They ruled Afghanistan between 1996 - 2001. During their rule they imposed ‘Sharia law’, a strict interpretation of Islamic law which meant women could not work, girls were banned from attending school, women had to cover their faces in public and always be accompanied by a male relative if they wanted to leave their homes. There were many more very very strict rules imposed.  They are known for their ruthlessness. Men and women were killed for breaking even small rules. However after 9/11 in 2001, the US army worked with the Afghanistan army to remove them from the city. Since then both the armies never allowed the Taliban to enter Kabul. Recently the USA called back its army. After this the Taliban became very strong and began encroaching into Afghan territory. After 20 years, the terrorist group has defeated the Afghan government and taken over the country. Thousands of police and other government security forces suddenly abandoned their posts, uniforms, and even weapons on Sunday 15 August night.

Then the Taliban captured the Presidential Palace. Late at night, fighters in pickup trucks and SUVs did victory rounds in the heart of Kabul. Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani stepped down as the President and fled the country. Word of their arrival spread like wildfire, and the city panicked. People are very scared that the Taliban will once again impose their rules. There were traffic snarls everywhere, and people rushed home to stock up on essentials, withdrawing money from banks. Afghanistan people rushed to various foreign embassies to secure visas to leave the country. There was absolute chaos at the Kabul Airport as various embassies rushed to evacuate their staff. The last Air India flight took off from Kabul on 15 August and landed at Delhi airport last night. The Taliban is all set to form a government in Afghanistan and control the country. There were a total of 129 people on the flight. A woman who was on the flight said, “The Taliban are going to kill my friends. The women in Afghanistan do not have any rights now. I am very scared for the women in Afghanistan.”
