Surprise Candidate Bhupendra Patel Becomes CM of Gujarat

Bhupendra Patel will take oath as the 17th chief minister of Gujarat, replacing Vijay Rupani, who unexpectedly stepped down from the top post.

The Gujarat State Legislative Assembly elections will be held in 2022. However, surprising everyone Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani stepped down from his post. After Rupani stepped down, there were strong rumours that BJP would pick a person from the Patidar Community to become the next CM. There was a long list of suitable candidates. However, the BJP then selected Bhupendra Patel to be the new CM of Gujarat and Rupani has supported this as well. Though Patel belonged to the Patidar community, Patel’s name was not on the list and no one thought he would be selected. BJP’s decision to make him CM has come as a huge surprise to people as Patel is a 1st time MLA and a very soft-spoken person. 

Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat invited Bhupendra Patel to take oath as the new Gujarat chief minister of Gujarat at 2:20pm on Monday 13 September 2021 in Gandhinagar. Union home minister Amit Shah is scheduled to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Bhupendra Patel. Patel is known to be close to Amit Shah as well as Anandiben Patel. Bhupendra Patel is fondly called as ‘Dada’ and has served as the Ahmedabad Municipal Councillor. Patel, holds a diploma in civil engineering, and was also the Chairperson of the Standing Committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA). He is also a trustee at Sardardham and Vishv Umiya Foundation. The decision regarding the new Gujarat Cabinet will be taken after Patel’s swearing-in ceremony.
