SII’s Covovax to Launch in September 2021

Adar Poonawalla, CEO of the world's largest vaccine manufacturer Serum Institute of India, announced the start of trials for the anti-covid vaccine Covovax.

You must all be familiar with the COVISHIELD by Serum Institute of India & COVAXIN Bharat Biotech vaccine which is being used to immunise people against COVID-19. We may very soon have a 3rd vaccine. 

Adar Poonawalla, CEO of the world's largest vaccine manufacturer Serum Institute of India has said that trials in India have started for Covovax vaccine. This vaccine is being developed in partnership by SII & American company Novavax. Mr Poonawalla said he had hoped to launch Covovax by June,  but it is likely to be launched by September. Covovax  has been found to be 89.3% effective against COVID-19 in a UK trial. Trials for Covovax have started in Pune and around 1,600 people are part of the study. The vaccine has also been tested against African and UK variants of COVID-19. These strains are believed to be much more infections. India has witnessed an alarming spike in fresh cases reported over the last two weeks.  Currently everyone above the age of 45 is eligible for vaccination.
