Malaika Arora’s father Anil Arora died at the age of 62 on 11th September 2024 allegedly by suicide. Malaika’s family members, relatives, former husband actor Arbaaz Khan and boyfriend Arjun Kapoor visited site immediately. Prominent Bollywood personalities including Riteish Deshmukh with wife Genelia Deshmukh, Salim Khan, Sushila Charak, Helen, Kareena Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Salman Khan’s adopted sister Arpita Khan Sharma, Malaika & Arbaaz’s son Arhaan, Kajol, Saif Ali Khan, Ananya Panday, Neha Dhupia, Chunky Panday, Sohail Khan, Kim Sharma, Seema Sajdeh, Ritesh Sidhwani, Angad Bedi, Sophie Choudry, Farah Khan, etc. also visited the site to pay tribute to Anil & offer condolences to Joyce, Malaika & Amruta. According to the reports, Anil jumped from the terrace of his building named Ayesha Manor in Bandra (West), where Anil lived with his family on the 6th floor at around 10:30 am. A senior police officer said “Only Malaika’s mother Joyce Polycarp and father Anil were there in the house at the time of the incident. Anil, who was reading the newspaper, got up and moved towards the terrace adjacent to the house. As Mehta didn’t return, Joyce went to check on him and found her former husband’s slippers there. She then leaned out of the terrace and looked down and spotted Mehta in the compound and a security guard screaming for help.” Joyce and her neighbors immediately rushed Anil to the Bhabha Hospital where the doctors declared him dead. The Mumbai police are investigating the case. According to the reports, Joyce & Anil had divorced when Malaika was 11 years old. After the divorce, Malaika & her younger sister Amrita shifted to Thane from Chembur with Joyce but maintained a close relationship with Anil. Both Malaika & Amruta loved their father and had no grudges against him or their mother. Initial enquiry revealed that despite the long divorce, Joyce and Anil had been living together for the past few years. Many sources claim that this living arrangement was made because Anil was suffering from some prolonged illness and was undergoing treatment. The police are still verifying it. Malaika & Amrita had visited their parent’s house the night before for a family dinner and were clicked in the compound of the Ayesha Manor’s building. The video and pictures of the same have gone viral on social media. Several unconfirmed reports claim that Anil had called both daughters, Malaika & Amrita before the alleged ‘suicide’ claiming that he was tired & done with his illness. However, the same has not been confirmed by the police. The police said they have not recovered any suicide note as yet, and are conducting inquiries with Anil’s family members. During the conversation, Joyce revealed that Anil would go into ‘depression’ frequently and later become normal. Her detailed official statement will be recorded later. The police also spoke to the building’s security guard who told them that he heard a loud sound and rushed to the spot and saw Mehta lying in the compound. The police have also secured CCTV footage in Anil is seen falling on the ground. But, because the cameras are installed only on the ground floor they do not cover the upper floors or the terrace and as a result, there is no footage of what happened there. Forensic teams is also conducting investigation of the house & the terrace. The police then sent Anil’s body to Cooper Hospital for a post-mortem examination. It was videographed in the presence of a senior police surgeon. Meanwhile, Varun Dhawan took to Instagram stories and slammed for clicking close-up pictures of the grieving family at the site through his Instagram Story. He wrote, "It is the most insensitive thing to point cameras in the face of the people who are grieving please think what you people are doing or what someone is going through when u do this. I understand it is work but sometimes another human might not be Ohkay with this #humanity." Later at night, Malaika shared a post on Instagram that read, “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear father, Anil Mehta. He was a gentle soul, a devoted grandfather, a loving husband, and our best friend. Our family is in deep shock by this loss, and we kindly request privacy from the media and well-wishers during this difficult time. We appreciate your understanding, support, and respect. With Gratitude, Joyce, Malaika, Amrita, Shakeel, Arhaan, Azaan, Rayyan, Casper, Axl, Duffy & Buddy.” Anil’s cremation will take place on 12th September 2024 at 11 am at the Hindu crematorium in Santacruz, Mumbai.
