Scam On WhatsApp Promising Free Laptops

Man scams 15 Lakh people into giving personal data, via WhatsApp and websites, using the Make In India scheme as a cover to give free laptops.

Rakesh Jangid who is only 23 years old who graduated from IIT in Kanpur this year has been caught with his brother running a scam on WhatsApp where they collected data from nearly 15 Lakh people in 2 days before being caught.

The created a website that claimed to be a part of the “Make In India” program set up by PM Modi and said it was a celebration of the victory in the recent elections, they site claimed to be giving free laptops to the youth, they spread the word through WhatsApp and once you clicked the links you would be directed to a site where it asked for your name, phone number, email and other personal information,

They were making money via ad revenue from website clicks, the site was very professionally done and had pictures of PM Modi and a form to be filled up, and would ask the person to forward the message to 10 people otherwise they would not be able to receive the laptop.

He was caught by Police in the Nagur region in Rajasthan.
