All of us in our life, in school or in college we are asked, “What would you do if you become a millionaire? Most of us must have made a fictitious list of all the things we would want to do if we have crores of Rupees.
Bihar’s Sushil Kumar became the first contestant to win Rs 5 crore on Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 5 in 2011. Sushil was from a middle-class family and Rs 5 crore would have made Sushil’s life easy. He wanted to pass the UPSC exam and the money would have helped him but he failed to invest his money wisely and his life changed due to some hasty decisions.
He wrote a long post on Facebook and spoke about the bad decisions he took that made his life very difficult.
He wrote, “2015-2016 was the most challenging time of my life. I didn’t know what to do. I was a local celebrity and would attend programs for 10 - 15 days a month somewhere or the other in Bihar. I was drifting away from my studies. I took the media very seriously in those days. Sometimes journalists would interview and write about me. Without any experience of how I should speak with them, I would tell them about the business so that they don’t think that I am jobless. Those businesses would collapse after a few days.”
He added, “After KBC, I became a philanthropist and was addicted to secret donations. I did many events in a month. Due to this, a lot of times, people cheated me which I came to know after the donations were made. Due to this, my relationship with my wife started worsening. She often said that I don’t know how to differentiate between the right and wrong people and that I wasn’t concerned about the future. We would often fight over this and I never listened to her.” “Slowly, I got addicted to alcohol, smoking, and other addictions. Whenever I stayed in Delhi for a week, I indulged in drinking and smoking with seven different groups.” He revealed to the media that he is bankrupt. After that people stopped calling him to events. He told the media, “I have lost my entire winning amount and bought two cows. Selling the cows’ milk is now my way of living and earning. The news report spread like wildfire.” Sushil also revealed that he almost parted ways with his wife. He said that he moved to Mumbai to become a filmmaker but realized that he is doing all of this just to escape from his problems.
He concluded by writing, “I realized that you get happiness when you follow your heart. I came back home and started preparing for a teaching course. I am also involved in a lot of environmental work that brings me peace. I had alcohol last in 2016 and quit smoking last year also. Now each day is like a celebration to me.”
