Rashford, Sancho & Sako Face Racist Abuse by England Fans

Hours after England fell at the final hurdle, losing on penalties to Italy in the final of Euro Cup 2020, there were reports of racist abuse being directed at the Black players.

England's loss at the Euro 2020 Finals came as a huge shock to the country. Everyone was convinced that England was sure to win but alas that did not happen. England lost the match because they scored only 2 goals in the penalty shoot out, while Italy scored 3 goals. England’s Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, were the players who failed to make the penalty shots. The defeat however didn’t go down well with English fans who physically attacked fans of Italy and also hurled racial abuses at them after the match ended. There was absolute chaos on the streets of London. English Football fans were seen fighting with cops and behaving like hooligans on the streets of London. London’s Leicester Square was left littered and vandalised by English fans. Not only this. After the defeat, netizens hurled racial abuses on the three players who missed the penalty shot. There were many such horrible statements and abuses that were sent to them on social media. Following racist  the abuse, Twitter removed over 1000 tweets and permanently suspended a number of accounts.

There is a mural of Marcus Rashford on a wall in Manchester. After the defeat, people went and wrote bad racial abuses on his painting. Immediately after this, people who support Rashford, covered the abuses by sticking plastic sheets over the painting. Then people wrote positive messages and stuck them on the plastic sheets as a show of support towards the players. England PM Boris Johnson, Queen Elizabeth’s grandson Prince William, who is also the president of the Football Association and other famous people have said these racial abuses towards the players are completely wrong. The England team worked hard and reached the finals. It is sad they lost but their defeat did not have to do with the colour of the skin. The players will always be heroes for reaching the finals.
