Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a nationwide lockdown from 25th March 2020 and there are no fresh episodes on TV as shooting for TV shows, films, and web series were all stopped from 17th March. Soon after that, following requests from people, Doordarshan decided to re-telecast the Ramayana and Mahabharata and other popular series again on its channels. DD National said on April 16, 77 million (7.7 crores) people across the globe watched the show.

Compared to this, the final episode of the most popular “Game of Thrones” in May 2019 had a world record of single night viewing with 19.3 million (1.93 Crore) viewers. Aired again after 33 years, Ramayana set a world record by becoming the highest viewed entertainment program globally. DD National in its tweet announced that the re-run of Ramayana on Doordarshan smashed viewership records worldwide. It is the most-watched show all over the world.

Earlier around the world Game of Thrones and Big Bang Theory were the most-watched television series.

Now our Indian TV show Ramayana has beaten them. Ramayana first aired on Doordarshan in 1987. The show featured Arun Govil as Rama, Dipika Chikhlia Topiwala as Sita, and Sunil Lahri as Lakshman.

The actors have again come into the limelight (become famous again) ever since the rerun episodes have

gone on-air. The lockdown is doing wonders for the channel (DD) as Ramayana created World Record and other iconic shows like Buniyaad, Shaktimaan, Shrimaan Shrimati, and Dekh Bhai Dekh are also doing well on the TRP charts.
