Queen Elizabeth II, an icon instantly recognisable to billions of people around the world has died aged 96.

Queen Elizabeth II, an icon instantly recognisable to billions of people around the world has died aged 96. The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral Palace in Scotland this afternoon UK.The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and reigned for 70 years which makes her the longest reigning monarch. The royal family - the Queen's son and heir Prince Charles and her other children, grandsons William and Harry and their families - have gathered at Balmoral retreat after doctors placed the Queen under medical supervision. Her eldest son, Charles, 73, succeeds as king immediately. However Prince Charles' coronation date has not been fixed as yet. In a statement, His Majesty the King (Charles) said: "The death of my beloved mother Her Majesty the Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. At  Buckingham Palace in  London, crowds began crying as they heard of her death. The Union flag on top of the palace was lowered to half-mast.
