Ponytails Banned In Japanese School

Japanese schools are known for very weird & strict rules, one of those is Ponytails getting banned as it can sexually arouse male students - Watch the full story.

Schools in India are strict. We have to wear uniforms, tie hair properly, not colour hair, cut nails, etc. However, there are some really weird school rules in Japan that do not make sense. According to a recent news report by Vice World News, Japanese schools have banned female students from tying their hair in ponytails, fearing that the “nape of their necks”  could “sexually excite” male students which will ultimately distract them from their studies. Even before this, Japan also had some senseless rules like “Only White Underwears are allowed” because they are not visible through uniform. Motoki Sugiyama, a former middle school teacher, told Vice World News said ‘The underwear rule is to make sure the underwear is not visible through the uniform. Schools don’t want boys to look at girls. This is why they put the ponytail rule. I don’t agree with these but because there’s such a lack of criticism and it’s become so normalized, students have no choice but to accept them," he said.

A survey held in 2020 suggested that about one in 10 schools has banned ponytails. Japan's schools have strict rules about hair colour, accessories, make-up, and uniforms, including underwear and the length of skirts and socks. Nearly half of the high schools in Tokyo ask students with hair that is wavy or not black to produce certificates confirming that it is natural and not artificially done. The harsh regulations started back in the 1870s when the Japanese government first established an increasingly strict system of education in order to reduce bullying and violence in schools. Anyway, what do you think about these strict and weird rules in Japanese schools? Do you have such weird rules in India? Do mention your thoughts down in the comment section below.
