PM Modi Visits Russia, Signs 9 MoUs with Putin
PM Modi's visit to Russia strengthens bilateral ties with key agreements on climate, trade, and nuclear energy, while Russia honors him with their highest civilian award.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Russia on 8th July 2024 for a high-profile two-day trip, marking his first visit to the country in five years. Upon arrival in Moscow, PM Modi was warmly welcomed by Russia's first deputy prime minister, Denis Manturov.
During his visit, PM Modi interacted with the Indian community in Moscow, paid tribute to Russian soldiers, and toured the ROSATOM nuclear plant. He had an informal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin a day before their official discussions. Pictures of the two leaders drinking tea, walking in the garden, and riding a golf cart together have gone viral on social media.
On 9th July 2024, PM Modi and President Putin had a formal meeting and signed nine Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering various topics:
1. Climate Crisis: Joint teams will address climate change and ensure low carbon emissions from trade between the countries.
2. Promotion of Trade: Both countries will promote bilateral trade and investments, organize B2B meetings, and hold business promotion events.
3. Scientific Research: India and Russia will cooperate in conducting research in the North Pole (Arctic Circle) and South Pole (Antarctic Circle).
4. Industrial Cooperation: New policies will ensure faster and better settlement of civil commercial disputes.
5. Nuclear Energy Cooperation: The countries will collectively expand and support Tamil Nadu’s Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant.
Following the meeting, President Putin honored PM Modi with Russia’s highest civilian award, "The Order of St. Andrew the Apostle the First-Called," for his outstanding efforts to promote partnership and friendship between India and Russia.
PM Modi announced the opening of two new Indian consulates in Kazan and Yekaterinburg to boost tourism and trade. In a significant development, Russia agreed to immediately discharge all Indian citizens recruited into the Russian army to fight in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. This decision follows reports of Indians being misled into joining the Russian army, with some losing their lives in the conflict.

PM Modi expressed his commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation, stating, "I look forward to reviewing all aspects of bilateral cooperation with my friend President Vladimir Putin and sharing perspectives on various regional and global issues."
After concluding his visit to Russia, PM Modi departed for Vienna, Austria, later the same day.
