Now Saudi Women Can Travel Freely

In a historic decision, Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz ordered that women can now travel without permission from Male relatives.

 

Saudi Arabia is famous for its strict laws on women. Men are given way too much authority over women. Until last year, Saudi women weren't even permitted to drive. Women had to follow many rules in Saudi. The way they dressed, how to behave, etc. they had many rules to follow. The country treated adult women like minors. Women had to ask permission from the male relatives for everything.  Because of the many women would run away from Saudi. In 2017, more than 800 people ran away from Saudi and asked the United Nations for King Salman bin Abdulaziz ordered that women can now travel without permission from Male relatives. This is a very big decision in the history of Saudi Arabia. Now only minors will need permission to travel.  

In January 2019, A saudi teenager Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, ran away from Saudi. She took a flight from Kuwait to Bangkok. From Bangkok, she was on her way to Australia to run away from her family. However In Bangkok officials stopped her and wanted to send her back to Saudi. She was afraid to go back to her country. So she locked herself in a hotel room and told people on Twitter about her situation. She said that in Saudi her family would abuse her because she wanted to leave Islam. In Saudi if person leave Islam religion, they can be killed for it.  She was afraid to go back to her country. However various countries helped her and she finally decided to stay in Canada. Saudi women have suffered due to these laws for years. This new law will make sure men and women are treated equally. This will bring about a real change for the women.
