Haryana native Neeraj Chopra participated in the Javelin throw competition in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for the very first time. The 23-year-old created history on 7th August as he became the first Indian to win a gold in Javelin throw and the second Indian to win an individual Olympic gold. Abhinav Binbdra was the first to win an individual gold medal in Olympics 2012. After winning the gold Neeraj Chopra said, Thank you all. I wasn't under pressure of competing with the rest of the javelin stars. You all helped me. I have worked hard but you all have worked equally hard with me.”Neeraj also dedicated his gold medal to Milkha Singh and said he would have wanted to personally meet the legendary sprinter with the medal. He also dedicated the gold to PT Usha and other Indian athletes who came close to winning an Olympic medal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephonic interaction with Neeraj. He said, "Today, just as the Olympics is about to end, you have made the country proud. You had to work for an extra year and there were so many troubles you had to face due to coronavirus. You got injured also and yet you performed so well. All this happens because of hard work.”
Chopra is a junior officer in the Indian army with the Rajputana Rifles. In 2018 he became the first Indian athlete to win the javelin at the Asian Games and at the Commonwealth Games. After his Gold win, Neeraj has been bestowed with several awards:

Indian online education app BYJUs has announced a cash prize of Rs 2 crore for Neeraj Chopra.
There were also congratulations for wrestler Bajrang Punia, who won a bronze medal in the men’s freestyle wrestling 65kg final on 7th August. This was India’s best Olympics as India won 7 medals - 1 Gold, 2 Silver, and 4 Bronze.
